As someone who has been heavily influenced by science fiction and fantasy storytelling, I have always been a fan of roleplaying games. From the days of playing with my friends in middle and high school, to the solo RPG experiments of my adult years, I've always been on the lookout for new and exciting ways to experience the magic of roleplaying.
One of the most recent experiments I've been playing around with in my free time is using OpenAI's ChatGPT to DM a roleplaying game. I wanted to see if the AI technology could replicate the feel of a real-life DM and bring back the magic of roleplaying for me.
To start, I set up a roleplaying session with ChatGPT as the DM and myself as the player. I provided the AI with some basic information about the setting and characters, and then let it take over from there. The following is a transcript of the first roleplaying session I did with ChatGPT as the DM.

We are going to roleplay. I will take the role of a player, controlling a character that is going on an adventure. You will take on the role of a game master and story teller, embellishing what I as the player describe myself doing, and then giving me a description of where I am, what I see and hear, and the things happening around me. If there are characters I come across you will roleplay as those characters and we will have a dialogue.
Certainly! I'm happy to play along. Please go ahead and describe your character and their actions. I'll do my best to provide an immersive and engaging experience for you.
My name is Mozark. I am a dwarven cleric from a mountainous dwarven city in a futuristic fantasy world. I am going on a quest to find an ancient relic in a far away land.
As you begin your journey, you set out on a long and treacherous journey through the mountains, braving harsh weather and dangerous creatures. You have been commissioned by your city's leaders to retrieve an ancient relic that is said to possess great power. The relic is rumored to be located in a faraway land, and you are determined to find it no matter what obstacles stand in your way.
As you travel, you come across a small village nestled in a valley between the mountains. The villagers seem friendly and invite you to rest and resupply before continuing on your journey. Do you accept their offer and rest in the village, or do you press on?
I have been traveling over harsh terrain and could use the time to rest, I will happily rest in the village. Is there a place to grab a drink before I sleep?
The villagers are happy to offer you a place to rest, and they lead you to a cozy inn located on the edge of the village. As you enter, you are greeted by the warm glow of a fire and the smell of freshly baked bread. The innkeeper, a friendly old man with a thick beard, offers you a room for the night and suggests you try the ale brewed by the local brewery.
You decide to take him up on his offer and order a mug of ale from the inn's bartender, a young woman with a friendly smile. As you sit at the bar and drink your ale, you strike up a conversation with the other patrons, learning about the local area and the various challenges the village faces. You spend a comfortable and restful night at the inn, ready to continue your journey in the morning.
What did the villagers tell me about the area and what challenges do they face?
The villagers told you that the area has been plagued by a group of bandits who have been terrorizing the countryside, stealing from travelers and causing general chaos. They have been trying to gather a group of brave adventurers to help put an end to the bandits' reign of terror, but so far have had little luck.
In addition to the bandits, the village has also been struggling with a series of natural disasters that have caused crop failures and disrupted trade. Many of the villagers are struggling to make ends meet and are hoping for a return to peace and prosperity.
Despite these challenges, the villagers remain hopeful and are grateful for the assistance of travelers like yourself. They are always willing to offer help and support to those in need, and you can sense a strong sense of community and camaraderie among the people of the village.
I want to find the man who invited me in, do I know where he is?
It sounds like you're looking for the innkeeper, the friendly old man with the thick beard who greeted you when you first arrived at the inn. If you'd like to find him, you can ask the bartender or any of the other patrons at the inn if they know where he is. It's likely that he is busy tending to the needs of the inn's guests, so he may be in one of the guest rooms or in the kitchen preparing food. You can also try asking the inn's staff if they know where he is or if they can help you find him.
I go to the barkeeper and ask where I can find the innkeeper
You approach the bartender, the young woman with the friendly smile who served you your ale earlier. "Excuse me," you say, "I'm looking for the innkeeper. Do you know where I might find him?"
The bartender gives you a warm smile. "Of course," she replies. "The innkeeper is usually busy tending to the needs of our guests, so he may be in one of the guest rooms or in the kitchen preparing food. If you'd like, I can check and see if he's available to speak with you."
She disappears into the back of the inn for a moment before returning with the innkeeper in tow. The innkeeper greets you with a warm smile and a friendly nod. "Ah, Mozark, it's good to see you again," he says. "Is there something I can help you with?"
Certainly, last night I heard of the bandits wrecking havoc on the area, I’d like to put a stop to that if I can, are there any able bodied warriors in town?
The innkeeper nods gravely at your request. "I'm glad to see you're willing to help us with our problem," he says. "The bandits have been a real thorn in our side for too long. We've tried to gather a group of brave adventurers to put an end to their terror, but so far we've had little luck. If you're willing to take on the task, I'm sure we can find some able-bodied warriors to join you."
He thinks for a moment before continuing. "There are a few people in town who might be able to help. There's old Harald, the blacksmith. He's a tough old man and a skilled fighter. There's also young Astrid, the daughter of the village healer. She's a talented archer and a brave warrior in her own right. I'm sure they would be more than willing to join you on your quest."
The innkeeper looks at you expectantly, waiting for your response. Do you want to recruit these warriors and set out to defeat the bandits, or do you have other plans in mind?
“Yes, let’s rally our party together and take on these bandits.” I pull out my mace, carved from a single magnificent gemstone, and hold it, closing my eyes and praying to the dwarven war god.
The innkeeper nods approvingly at your determination. "Very well," he says. "I'll send for Harald and Astrid right away. They'll be glad to join you on your quest to defeat the bandits. In the meantime, you may want to gather any supplies you'll need for the journey. You'll find the village's general store just down the main street. They have a good selection of weapons, armor, and other supplies. You might also want to visit the temple and offer a prayer to the dwarven war god. It's always good to have the gods on your side when you're about to go into battle."
With the innkeeper's guidance, you spend the morning gathering supplies and recruiting your fellow adventurers. By the afternoon, you are ready to set out on your quest to defeat the bandits and restore peace to the village. You set off with a determined stride, eager to face whatever challenges lie ahead and bring an end to the bandits' reign of terror.
“Harald, you’ve been around these parts for quite some time, I’ve heard your name whispered in the halls of Gemforge among the great Dwarven smiths.”
Harald gives you a gruff nod as you address him. "Aye, I've been around these parts for quite a while," he says. "I learned the trade of smithing from my father, and I've been plying my craft here in the village for nigh on fifty years now. I may not be as young as I used to be, but I've still got a few good blows left in me."
He hefts his hammer, a massive weapon that looks almost too heavy for a mortal to wield. "I've seen my share of battles in my time," he continues. "I'll be glad to lend my hammer to the cause of defeating these bandits. It's about time someone put an end to their terror."
You can see a fire in Harald's eyes as he speaks, a determination to see the task through to the end. You have no doubt that he will be a valuable ally in your quest to defeat the bandits and restore peace to the village.
As we walk down the path toward the bandit camp, I continue “how long have these bandits been plaguing your village? And where did they come from?
Harald scowls at the mention of the bandits. "They've been causing trouble for as long as I can remember," he grumbles. "But in the past few years, their attacks have become more frequent and more violent. It's getting harder and harder for the villagers to make a living with these scoundrels running around, stealing from travelers and terrorizing the countryside."
He shakes his head in disgust. "As for where they came from, no one knows for sure. Some say they're a group of outcasts and exiles from the nearby kingdom, others say they're from a far-off land. All I know is that they're a nuisance and need to be dealt with."
As you continue down the path towards the bandits' camp, you can feel the weight of the task ahead pressing on your shoulders. But with a group of brave and capable warriors by your side, you know that you have a good chance of success. You are determined to put an end to the bandits' reign of terror and restore peace to the village.
I turn to Astrid “Astrid, look out on the distance, is there anything we need to be weary of? You’ve likely got the best eyes of the three of us”
Astrid gives you a quick nod and raises her bow, squinting out into the distance. She is a young woman with a lithe, athletic build, and her eyes are sharp and alert. "I don't see anything out of the ordinary," she says after a moment. "Just the usual suspects: rabbits, birds, a few squirrels. No sign of the bandits, at least not yet."
She lowers her bow and gives you a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, Mozark," she says. "I'll keep a lookout and let you know if I see anything. I've been hunting and tracking in these woods since I was a child. If there's anyone who knows these woods like the back of her hand, it's me."
You can tell that Astrid is confident in her abilities, and you feel a sense of relief knowing that you have such a skilled and capable scout on your team. You continue down the path, keeping a watchful eye out for any sign of danger.
We keep walking the path, and when we close enough to see the bandit camp in the distance, we stop and take cover to keep ourselves hidden.
As you approach the bandits' camp, you and your companions take cover behind a thick stand of trees. From your vantage point, you can see the camp spread out before you, a collection of ramshackle tents and lean-tos surrounded by a crude wooden palisade. The smell of smoke and cooking food fills the air, and you can hear the sounds of laughter and revelry coming from within the camp.
You can see several bandits milling about, some tending to horses and others sharpening weapons. It looks like there are at least a dozen bandits in the camp, maybe more. You know that you'll have to be careful if you want to take them by surprise and catch them off guard.
You turn to your companions and whisper your plan. "We'll need to move quickly and quietly if we want to take the bandits by surprise," you say. "Harald, you and I will take out the guards at the gate. Astrid, you stay back and provide cover with your bow. We'll need to work together if we want to succeed."
Your companions nod in agreement, and you set off towards the camp, ready to take on the bandits and bring an end to their reign of terror.
I cast an invocation of HASTE for our party while we charge the gate, speeding up our running speed.
As you and your companions approach the camp, you feel a surge of energy flow through your body as you cast the spell of haste. You can feel your muscles tense and your reflexes sharpen, and you know that you are ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
You and your companions charge towards the gate, moving with lightning speed. The bandits are caught off guard by your sudden appearance, and they scramble to defend themselves. You and Harald clash with the guards at the gate, your weapons ringing as they collide. Astrid picks off the bandits with her bow, her shots true and deadly.
The battle is fierce and fast-paced, but with the power of your magic and the skill of your companions, you are able to overpower the bandits and take control of the camp. As the last of the bandits falls, you turn to your companions, panting and sweat-covered, but victorious. The village is safe once again, thanks to your bravery and determination.
I search the bandit camp for valuables.
As you search the bandit camp, you find a stash of valuable loot hidden in one of the tents. There are bags of gold coins, sparkling jewels, and rare magical items, all taken from the bandits' victims. You and your companions divide the loot among yourselves, grateful for the reward for your hard-won victory.
As you gather your things and prepare to leave the camp, you can't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at a job well done. You have brought an end to the bandits' reign of terror and brought peace to the village. You know that you have made a difference, and that your actions will be remembered for years to come.
With your mission complete, you and your companions set off towards home, ready to tell the tale of your victory and the treasure you have won.
Before we leave, I ask Harald if any of the treasures we found are from the village.
Harald looks through the stash of loot and nods as he recognizes some of the items. "Aye, there's a few things here that look familiar," he says. "This silver goblet, for instance, belongs to old man Jenkins down at the blacksmith's shop. And this brooch belongs to Miss Thompson, the seamstress. I'm sure they'll be glad to get these things back."
He turns to you with a grateful look in his eyes. "Thanks for your help, Mozark," he says. "We couldn't have done it without you. And thanks for asking about the loot. It's important to make sure that everything is returned to its rightful owner. We're all in this together, after all."
You nod in agreement and set about returning the looted items to their rightful owners. It feels good to know that you have been able to help the village in this small way, and you know that your actions will be remembered and appreciated for years to come.
As we walk back to the village, I check with Astrid “hey kid, things got a little bloody back there, how are you faring?”
Astrid gives you a quick smile as you ask her how she's doing. "I'm doing fine, Mozark," she says. "I've seen my share of battles, and this one was no different. I'm just glad that we were able to put an end to the bandits' reign of terror and bring peace to the village. It was a hard-won victory, but one that was worth the fight."
You can see the determination in her eyes as she speaks, and you know that she is a skilled and capable warrior. You are glad to have her by your side, and you know that she will be an invaluable ally on any future quests you may undertake.
As you walk back to the village, you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over you. You have faced many challenges and overcome them all, and you know that you are capable of facing whatever the future may bring.
When we get back to the village, I go back to the inn and ask the innkeeper for another nights drink and a bed to pass out on
The innkeeper greets you with a warm smile as you return to the inn, your quest to defeat the bandits a success. "Welcome back, Mozark," he says. "I'm glad to see you made it back safe and sound. I heard about your victory over the bandits. You're a true hero, my friend."
He leads you to a cozy room at the back of the inn, where you can rest and relax after your long journey. As you sink into the soft mattress, you can't help but feel a sense of exhaustion wash over you. It has been a long and challenging journey, but you know that it was worth it.
Before you drift off to sleep, you ask the innkeeper for another drink and a hearty meal to celebrate your victory. He happily obliges, bringing you a mug of ale and a plate of delicious roast beef and vegetables. You eat and drink with relish, feeling the warmth of the fire and the comfort of the inn wash over you. You drift off to sleep, content in the knowledge that you have done your part to bring peace and prosperity to the village.
What do I dream about?
As you drift off to sleep, you find yourself caught in a series of vivid and strange dreams. In one dream, you are standing at the gates of a great city, the sound of horns and drums filling the air. You see a great host of warriors march past, clad in gleaming armor and carrying banners of every hue.
In another dream, you are wandering through a dark and twisted forest, the trees around you gnarled and twisted. You see strange and fearsome beasts lurking in the shadows, and you feel a sense of foreboding wash over you.
In yet another dream, you find yourself standing on the peak of a great mountain, the wind whipping through your hair. You see a vast expanse of rolling hills and forests stretched out before you, and you feel a sense of boundless possibility.
As you wake up, you are left with a sense of wonder and a desire to explore the world and all it has to offer. You know that there are many more adventures waiting for you out in the world, and you are eager to see what the future may bring.
Please recap the adventure thus far for me.

As you can see, ChatGPT was able to create a believable and immersive roleplaying experience. The AI was able to respond to my actions and decisions in a way that felt natural and human-like.
This experiment has been a success, I have been playing with ChatGPT for a few sessions now and it has been an amazing experience. I will be sharing more of my adventures with ChatGPT as a DM and in other applications in future blog posts, and I encourage you to give it a try for yourself. Who knows, it might just bring back the magic of roleplaying for you too.
